In 2015/2016 midwives delivered 14.9% of all babies born in BC. Midwifery is a regulated health profession and an established part of the BC healthcare system. Registered Midwives (RM's) provide primary maternity care to healthy mothers and babies from conception, through pregnancy, labour & delivery and for 6 weeks after birth.
Midwives are highly-trained and university educated. They are registered and regulated by the College of Midwives of BC and the BC Health Professions Act. There are 5 main principals by which Midwives in BC must practice:
